Fog caused Rs 100 crore loss to Indian Railways

New Delhi: Railways incurred a loss of about Rs 100 crore last month due to fog-induced train disruption, a senior railway official said. On an average, 35-40 trains were cancelled for the greater part of last month due to poor visibility.
Foggy weather condition also affected movement of freight trains, which compounded the losses for railways, he said. The official said each train cancellation led to a loss of Rs five lakh per day and disruption in freight traffic pushed back the railways earnings by Rs 2.5 crore each day.
"All put together, we incurred a loss close to Rs 100 crore last month," he said as train schedule returned to normalcy this week. Railway Board Member (Traffic) Vivek Sahai, talking to reporters on January 22, had described the fog this season as one of the worst in recent months.
As many as 13 lives were lost in back-to-back rail accidents during the month. As railways asked its drivers to apply speed restrictions during dense fog, Sahai said they were also in favour of introducing Anti-Collision Device (ACD) technology and Train Protection Warning System (TPWS) to prevent mishaps during poor visibility.
