IR plans 24-hour train security helpline

NEW DELHI: In a bid to provide speedy assistance to train passengers in distress, railway minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to announce the launch of a security helpline in her rail budget.

After the 24-hour national toll-free helpline becomes operational, a passenger can seek help or even lodge an FIR for any crime — molestation, rape, robbery, theft, drugging or burglary — on moving trains just by making a call. Though the passenger-friendly proposal requires only Rs 5 crore, it has been neglected for long by mandarins in Rail Bhavan. Banerjee had directed officials to give utmost      importance to passenger security.
